Project Overview

Brief

Following the discovery of concealed asbestos insulation to the burner sleeves during the dismantling and replacement of the kiln lining and roof, Savana Environmental was contracted to undertake a full environmental clean of the internal sections of the kiln removing approximately 15 tonnes of potentially contaminated brick dust and materials in the process.

Services

Following the internal environmental clean an enclosure was formed to the top of the kiln to allow removal of the loose fill insulation and insulation packing to the burner sleeves from above. All concrete slabs to the kiln roof were lifted cleaned and retained for reinstatement. Insulation packing collars to the burner sleeves were injected and removed along with the burner collars.

All loose fill insulation was removed from the roof void of the kiln along with the asbestos cement base plates removing approximately 7 tonnes of contaminated materials in the process, and full decontamination of the roof void was undertaken.

Outcome

Due to the potential for instability in sections of the roof, scaffolding framework was erected above the kiln to provide anchor points for fall restraint equipment with all operatives wearing full body harnesses and secured to inertia safety lines at all times during works.

Due to the large volumes of waste generated, a scaffold loading deck was erected at the side of the kiln for loading of waste into stillages for lifting down and transportation to external skips using forklift trucks.
