Teesworks - Steel House Park and Ride
Location:
Teesworks
Value:
£300,000
Duration:
32 weeks
Project Overview
Brief
The enabling works for the Steel House Park and Ride project required the removal of relocation of 240,000m3 of stockpiled materials and spoil to clear land for the construction of a park-and-ride car park for over 1500 vehicles to facilitate the on-going construction works during the redevelopment of the wider site.
Services
Site ground investigations and surveys found hotspots of asbestos contamination at varying levels and depths of the stockpile which was 8m in height at the highest point.
Savana Environmental Ltd were contracted to work alongside GRP Contractors Ltd under the Main Contractor & Earthworks Contractor Halls Construction Ltd to remove licensed asbestos-containing materials during the excavation works.
A permit-to-work system was implemented and the site marked out into 25m x 25m grid squares, each grid was subject to trail holes and soil sampling to ascertain presence of asbestos at varying depths along with other contaminants. Identified surface asbestos materials were removed by hand-picking during a surface walkover.
A watch and brief was undertaken during all bulk excavations to check for the presence of asbestos-containing materials during excavation and loading.
Outcome
Bulk excavation of hotspots and separation of contaminated materials was undertaken with excavators with picking and removal of contaminated materials carried out, re-testing of soils was undertaken confirming remaining materials were non-hazardous which were subsequently stockpiled at another location on site.
