Project Overview

Brief

Savana Environmental was contracted to remove all asbestos-containing materials from the site at Dunston Hill Primary School prior to demolition of the buildings to make way for new affordable housing scheme.

Services

Works involved the removal of asbestos-insulated pipework located within a series of below ground shallow services ducts approximately 180m in length within the 2 main school buildings using wrap and cut techniques under fully controlled conditions.

Ducts were located using existing access hatches and mapped out at ground level. Floor saws were utilised to cut the concrete floors cast over the duct covers to pre-determined depths. Concrete was broken out by hand using 110v breakers prior to enclosure construction to expose the duct covers beneath and minimize hazardous waste generated during the works with concrete waste disposed with demolition arisings.

Outcome

Further works were undertaken to remove asbestos insulation to pipework and insulation residues to walls within the basement boiler room of each of the main school buildings under fully controlled conditions.

All works were undertaken in close collaboration and co-ordination with the demolition contractor and main contractor to allow subsequent building demolition and ground works to be undertaken concurrently, with ongoing works following completion of each building.
